About the project

A canon with the viewer still in the room.

Thomas Caspellan created the Great Cinema Master List to bridge a gap between critical canons and the lived experience of watching films.

Traditional lists are invaluable records of prestige, influence, and consensus. But they rarely account for the conditions under which people actually watch: after a long day, with a limited evening, in a particular mood, hoping to be challenged—or simply swept away.

The result is a global list of 713 films guided by three visible priorities: Greatness, Engagement, and Ease. It is rigorous without pretending to be objective, opinionated without hiding its rules, and broad enough to place silent cinema, animation, popular entertainment, documentary, and international art film in meaningful conversation.
