How to use GCML

The Field Guide.

How GCML works, what the numbers mean, and where to go next.

01 · What the numbers mean

Read the score before the rank.

01

Greatness

Artistic, historical, formal, critical, and durable cinematic achievement.

02

Engagement

How powerfully a film holds attention and rewards the viewing experience.

03

Ease

Lower-friction viewing: clarity, pacing, duration, intensity, and the practical conditions a film asks of its audience.

04

Total

GCML Total is the combined recommendation score created by the 40% Greatness / 40% Engagement / 20% Ease model. It is not simply a pure measure of which film is artistically greatest.

Worked example · Canon rank #1

Parasite

9.6 Greatness × 40% + 10.0 Engagement × 40% + 9.6 Ease × 20% = 9.76 Total.

The arithmetic is reproducible. The Greatness, Engagement, and Ease scores themselves remain editorial judgments.

02 · What do you want to do?

Choose the tool that matches the question.

03 · How the canon is built

External reference, then direct curation.

Big Three

Sight & Sound · IMDb · AFI

These are external reference lists. Their membership and ranks provide context, but they do not directly determine GCML Greatness, Engagement, Ease, or Total scores.

GCML Curated

230 films outside all three

These films were added through direct curation to extend the canon beyond the 483-film distinct Big Three union.

04 · Reading the data

Context matters, but not every field is a score.

Awards

Contextual metadata only. Awards add no scoring points.

External ranks

Sight & Sound, IMDb, and AFI ranks provide context and reference. They are not inputs to GCML scores.

Tie-breaker

Equal Totals are ordered by higher Greatness, then higher Engagement, then title.

Spoiler-Free Premise

A setup-only, spoiler-conscious description that avoids later-act revelations.

Why It Belongs

The concise editorial case for a film’s inclusion, grounded in craft, influence, form, or emotional power.

US content ratings

Known classifications are retained. When a reliable US classification is absent or uncertain, the film is marked Not Rated rather than assigned a guess.

Ease

A practical measure of viewing friction, not intelligence, quality, or artistic importance.

Seen

Records a viewing and updates Cinema Passport. Tonight excludes Seen films unless Include rewatches is on; enabling it makes them eligible, not guaranteed results.

Loved

Helps Tonight learn related tastes once at least three films are both Seen and Loved. Loved without Seen does not train these preferences.

Want to Watch

Gives a saved film a modest preference among already strong Tonight matches; it cannot override exclusions.

Not for Me

Always excludes that exact film from Tonight, even if unseen or marked Rewatch. Broader taste patterns require at least three Seen + Not for Me films.

Rewatch

Contributes a preference only when that film is Seen and Include rewatches is on. Seen films without Rewatch intent can also qualify.

My Film ▾

Contains Want to Watch, Loved, Not for Me, and Rewatch.
