Coverage and editorial verification
Source & Audit.
How the edition verifies its titles, source lists, metadata, premises, and scoring boundaries.
Public verification
What a visitor can verify.
The published canon and its explanatory pages expose the construction of this edition without asking readers to mistake transparency for objective artistic truth.
Film-level metadata verification
Country & Language Verification
Country attribution preserves the production identities recorded for each film, including historical entities such as Czechoslovakia, the USSR, West Germany, and Yugoslavia. Historical countries are not retroactively reassigned to successor states.
Film-level language data was independently re-audited. “None” and “Dialogue-free” were removed because neither is a language, and Tagalog / Filipino was normalized as one language identity: Filipino (Tagalog). The verified canon therefore represents 49 languages.

What these checks do not prove
They do not prove that the canon is objectively correct, that its scores are scientific measurements, or that every editorial judgment is beyond dispute. They show that the published system is internally consistent with its stated rules and source data.
Visible checks, broader verification. Automated release checks run before publication across routes, links, filters, ranks, responsive rules, identity-safe metadata, award records, poster architecture, and editorial-data invariants. The current edition contains 62 individual country labels and complete mood coverage across 106 distinct tags. All 713 films have a published Primary poster, with 714 total traceable poster assets including approved alternates.
Final editorial-copy audit
Specific, spoiler-conscious, and structurally varied.
All 713 films now have finalized concise and expanded premises plus concise and expanded Why It Belongs copy. Every premise passed the setup-only and redundancy review, including 26 documentary, essay, experimental, compilation, diary, and extended works. The expanded appreciation copy contains 712 distinct opening trigrams and no imposed “In [Title],” frames.
Director representation
Visible concentration, full directory.
The leading names reveal where the canon concentrates its attention. Co-directed films count once for each credited director.

Scope & eligibility
A feature-film canon with visible exceptions.
Eligible by default
Narrative feature films, documentary feature films, and animated feature films.
Eligible by exception
Extended cinematic works, anthology works, and hybrid works with substantial critical or historical standing as cinema—only when the work can be evaluated principally through cinematic form.
Normally outside scope
Conventional episodic television, standard miniseries, video games, filmed stage productions, music videos, interactive works, and gallery installations.
Current boundary example
Twin Peaks: The Return remains labeled as an Extended Work. Its inclusion is an acknowledged exception, not a rule that makes conventional television automatically eligible.
Coverage transparency
Breadth can be measured. Balance still requires judgment.
The current 713-film boundary consists of the 483-film distinct union of Sight & Sound, IMDb, and AFI, plus 230 GCML Curated films outside all three.
The verified edition contains 713 ranked films: 483 appear on at least one tracked external list and 230 are GCML Curated additions outside all three. These figures establish scale and integrity; they do not by themselves prove balanced representation.

Interpretation rule: low representation is a flag for examination, not automatic proof of a curatorial defect. GCML has not adopted parity targets.
Interpretive note: Source & Audit reports constitution, sourcing, counts, coverage, and verification. For the methodological implications of uneven coverage, curatorial bias, finite scope, the editorial choice of canon size, weighting choices, and numerical precision, see Critical Appraisal →

What this edition promises.
IMDb snapshot
Ranks are frozen to August 3, 2026 at 09:59. Soorarai Pottru is recorded at #250; the obsolete inherited rank attached to Autumn Sonata was removed. Future IMDb movement will not silently alter this edition.
Sight & Sound ties
The main sheet stores official tied ranks. The External Rank Audit also stores positions 1–264 so every tied film can be traced without inventing unique official ranks.
Ratings
Recognized US ratings were normalized and targeted errors corrected. When no reliable US classification was established, the film is marked Not Rated rather than guessed. Not Rated is not a statement of child suitability.
Film types
Film Type is an editorial classification. Experimental shorts, documentaries, docufiction, filmed stage work, compilation cuts, silent features, essay films, and extended works are separated from ordinary narrative features.
Premises
All premises were rewritten or edited to setup-only descriptions, capped at 30 words, deduplicated, and screened for common twist-revealing language.
Why It Belongs
All 713 blurbs are unique. Wording was reviewed to remove repeated stock structures while preserving film-specific claims about craft, form, influence, and emotional power.
Scores
Greatness, Engagement, and Ease remain curated judgments. External-list ranks provide context but are not mathematical score inputs.
Country and language
Labels are simplified for readability and may not capture every financing nation or spoken language in complex co-productions.
Historical country labels
German production labels follow the political entity at the time of production: pre-1949 titles retain Germany, verified 1949–1989 West German productions use West Germany, and post-reunification titles use Germany. Existing co-production partners remain visible.
Original poster artwork
Every ranked film has an immutable poster-manifest identity. Supplied custom artwork belongs to this edition's visual system and is not presented as original studio release artwork; pending assets remain visibly marked rather than invented.
Major-award metadata
Award totals count every recorded competitive film win from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTA, Cannes, Venice, and Berlin. Only Picture or top-film honors, Direction, Screenplay, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress are named. Named wins link to an official film, ceremony, festival, or category record; total-count links use the closest official record available, with an institutional archive clearly labeled when no film-specific total page exists. Festival totals use the principal feature-film competition jury. Awards remain reference metadata and contribute zero points to 40/40/20.
