Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free+
Viking teenager Hiccup injures a rare Night Fury during his island village's war with dragons but cannot kill it. Secretly befriending and naming the creature Toothless, he develops a new understanding of flight and dragon behavior while training as a hunter.
Why it belongs
In How to Train Your Dragon, DeBlois and Sanders make flight ecstatic through spatially clear animation, Powell's soaring score, and Hiccup and Toothless learning through shared vulnerability.
Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case+
Tail-fin mechanics, drawing, fish, hand gestures, cloud layers, island cliffs, and John Powell's themes make trust practical and flight bodily legible. Toothless's animal-specific movement avoids petlike genericism.
