Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free+
Thirteen-year-old witch Kiki leaves home with her cat Jiji for a year of independent training and settles in the seaside city of Koriko. With no special skill beyond flying, she opens a delivery service from a baker's attic.
Why it belongs
Hayao Miyazaki treats independence as everyday labor, making flight, weather, delivery routes, friendship, and creative doubt quietly thrilling.
Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case+
Kiki's changing confidence emerges through tasks and relationships rather than a villain, giving artistic fatigue singular emotional truth. Koriko's hills, traffic, rooftops, sea winds, shop routines, and hand-drawn flight make work physically specific.
