Spoiler-free premise

Two teenage friends invite an older woman on an impulsive road trip through Mexico.

Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free

Mexico City teenagers Julio and Tenoch invite older Spanish woman Luisa to a fictional beach called Boca del Cielo. When she accepts, they begin a road trip through rural Mexico, turning boasts, friendship, and concealed resentments into unstable companionship.

Why it belongs

Through mobile long takes and dry narration, Y Tu Mamá También joins erotic coming-of-age energy to a wider Mexico glimpsed beyond the boys' privilege.

Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case

Handheld car interiors, roadside encounters, unbroken conversations, and an omniscient narrator repeatedly widen the frame beyond the trio. Luna, Bernal, and Verdú make desire inseparable from class, friendship, performance, and mortality.
