Spoiler-free premise

A Spanish expedition descends from the Andes into the Amazon in search of a legendary city of gold.

Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free

In 1560, Spanish conquistadors descend from the Andes into the Amazon searching for El Dorado. Don Lope de Aguirre supports a mutiny against expedition leader Pedro de Ursúa and pushes the soldiers, nobles, enslaved people, and raft crews farther downriver.

Why it belongs

Through a real river expedition, oppressive jungle, Popol Vuh, and Kinski's coiled, limping Aguirre, Aguirre, the Wrath of God makes imperial madness physical.

Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case

Klaus Kinski's twisted posture makes conquest look diseased before his declarations reveal it. Steep mountain paths, unstable rafts, fog, insects, cannon fire, river current, and Popol Vuh's spectral music deny the expedition secure ground.
