Spoiler-free premise

Allied airmen in a German POW camp organize a mass escape through three tunnels while guards monitor their every resource.

Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free

German authorities gather repeatedly escaping Allied officers inside the high-security Stalag Luft III, hoping concentrated surveillance will contain them. Squadron Leader Roger Bartlett instead organizes hundreds of prisoners to dig three tunnels, forge documents, tailor clothes, and plan routes.

Why it belongs

John Sturges makes collective preparation as exciting as escape through camp geography, specialized labor, Bernstein's march, and a superbly differentiated ensemble.

Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case

Tunnel shafts, hidden dirt, forged papers, civilian clothing, roll calls, maps, and parallel tasks organize the camp as a working system. The later dispersal preserves individual routes without losing the collective achievement behind them.
