Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free+
In a Hutsul village in the Carpathians, Ivan and Marichka fall in love despite a feud begun by their fathers. Seasonal labor, family obligation, death, marriage, and spiritual belief shape Ivan's life within a richly ritualized mountain community.
Why it belongs
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors makes Hutsul culture ecstatic through rushing camera movement, saturated color, music, costume, ritual, and landscape that overwhelms conventional realism.
Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case+
