Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free+
In a brutal medieval Bohemia, robber patriarch Kozlík's sons raid travelers and clash with royal forces. Mikoláš abducts Marketa, daughter of rival Lazar, while hostage Kristián enters the clan's world of winter survival, revenge, pagan custom, and contested Christianity.
Why it belongs
Marketa Lazarová makes the Middle Ages sensorially alien through snow, animals, fractured sound, roving camera, and faith embedded in violence.
