Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free

Eduardo Coutinho returns to the people and locations of Cabra Marcado para Morrer, a film halted by Brazil’s 1964 military coup. Surviving footage from the abandoned production is placed beside new interviews with the peasant participants, including the dispersed family of activist João Pedro Teixeira.

Why it belongs

Twenty Years Later makes a halted film and twenty-year return into an ethics of memory, letting participants revise revolutionary images through lived history.

Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case

Coutinho makes historical interruption part of the film's form, placing footage abandoned after Brazil's 1964 coup beside later interviews with the surviving participants and the family the original production sought to portray.
