Spoiler-free premise

Two extended families drift through an oppressive summer around a decaying country estate.

Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free

At the decaying Mandrágora estate in humid Salta, Mecha drinks beside a filthy pool while family members drift through rooms. Cousin Tali considers a shopping trip across the Bolivian border as children, servants, accidents, and storms thicken the summer.

Why it belongs

Through offscreen bodies, clinking ice, thunder, crowded beds, and a pool no one wants to clean, La Ciénaga makes class decay audible.

Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case

A murky pool, broken glass, fans, beds, hunting rifles, distant thunder, overlapping voices, and low framing create social claustrophobia—the soundscape reveals relationships before dialogue explains them.
