Spoiler-free premise
A colonial officer stationed in a remote outpost waits indefinitely for a transfer and recognition.
Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free+
In the late eighteenth century, Spanish colonial officer Don Diego de Zama waits in remote Asunción for a transfer that will restore status and reunite him with family. Administrative delays, desire, Indigenous presence, and rumors of bandit Vicuña Porto erode his authority.
Why it belongs
Lucrecia Martel makes colonial waiting absurd and diseased through displaced sound, animal intrusions, bureaucratic rooms, and Cacho's increasingly hollow Zama.
Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case+
Daniel Giménez Cacho's formal posture decays as recognition never arrives. Llamas, fish, fans, letters, wigs, river mud, layered voices, and off-center framing make colonial order porous.
