Spoiler-free premise

During a Taipei cinema's final screening of Dragon Inn, workers and sparse patrons drift through rain, corridors, seats, and memory.

Read expanded premiseLonger, still spoiler-free

On the closing night of Taipei's Fu-Ho Grand Theater, King Hu's Dragon Inn plays to a nearly empty auditorium. A limping ticket clerk searches for projectionist Hsiao-Kang while cruisers, ghosts, and actors from the old film occupy the cavernous building.

Why it belongs

Goodbye, Dragon Inn makes an old cinema's emptiness funny and mournful through duration, rain, echoing corridors, bodies, and King Hu's screen within the screen.

Read expanded why it belongsThe fuller editorial case

Leaking roofs, red seats, long hallways, restroom glances, peanut shells, projector light, and extended silence make the theater a physical memory machine. Sparse movement lets spectatorship itself become the event.
